Traditional Maltese crib at the Vienna University Campus Christmas Market

Following the successful presentation of the traditional Maltese crib in recent years in prominent places like the Vatican and Manger Square in Bethlehem, this year the traditional Maltese Crib will be on display in Vienna, the capital city of Austria.

The Ministry for Culture has been making preparations in collaboration with the Maltese Embassy in Vienna and the MTA office in Austria to present this traditional part of Maltese culture in one of the most attended Christmas Villages in Europe.

The setting of the crib represents a traditional Maltese Nativity scene in a larger format with handmade life-size figures produced by Gozitan artist, Manwel Grech. The new crib structure was adjusted to fit the environment where it is being presented and was designed and manufactured by Jennings Falzon and Norman Hill. They both worked under the direction of the Culture Directorate.

The official inauguration took place on Friday evening in the presence of H.E the President of Malta George Vella and his wife. Also present for the inauguration were Culture Minister Owen Bonnici and the Mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig.

The crib presents the right opportunity to promote Maltese culture and traditions overseas during a period where different people are celebrating during the festive season. It also presents an opportunity to promote Malta as a cultural destination, attracting tourists who are interested in various aspects of arts and culture.

During the official inauguration KorMalta - the national choir - presented a musical programme including Maltese traditional carols.

The traditional Maltese crib will be on display at the Vienna University Campus between the 14th of November until the 22nd of December.
